The project area
The Ljubljana Marsh
Project activities will be carried out in the Ljubljana Marsh, which lies in Central Slovenia, the southernmost part of the Ljubljana Basin. It is more than 15 thousand hectares big complex of meadows, fern areas, fields, hedges, woods and channels. The combination of different habitats provides a unique living conditions for many plants and animals that can rarely be found elsewhere in Slovenia and Europe.
The underground world is also very rich. Over 40 pile dwellings have been discovered beneath the surface of the Ljubljana Marshes so far. Two groups of prehistoric pile dwelling have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2011. In this case nature conservation also means protecting our cultural and historical heritage.
Ljubljana Marsh is important not only because of its plant and animal species richness, but also because of its ecological services. The interdependent ecosystems clean our air, water and soil, recharge our underground water reservoir, retain flood water, cool hot summers and present recreation and relaxation area, and research polygon for numerous scientific researches.
