Presentation of farming on Ljubljana Marsh

Farming on Ljubljana Marsh is very specific and very significant both for the production of crops and nature preservation. The farming methods and forms have been shaped by and adapted to natural features and types of soil.

Due to specifics traits, natural features and legislation, this area is governed by a set of restrictions, which greatly limit what the owners and tenants of farming land can do.

The entire area covers 13,500 hectares. In order to preserve the current levels of production, farmers need about 70 per cent of land for modern production of feed and other produce, while the remainder of land could be dedicated to intensive nature protection guidelines. With good planning, incentives and agreements among users and stakeholders in the area, a part of agricultural land earmarked for more intensive production, a part of the meadows could be dedicated to use in accordance with natural protection guidelines.
