Suppression goldenrod with using goats

Published: 01. Jun 2015

In the last 10 years we are seeing in the Ljubljana Marsh rapid expansion of areas with invasive alien plant species Goldenrod (Solidago sp.). This occurs particularly on the abandoned meadows and fields, but quickly grows well in areas that are not yet covered wth vegetation (eg. with soil heaped surface). Goldenrod represents one of the threats to the reduction of extensive grasslands in the Ljubljana Marsh, which is an important habitat for many organisms.

For the purpose that areas with goldenrod reduced and thus limit its spread, we started grazing goats on small area heavily infested with goldenrod. It is one of the ways in addition to cutting and mulching, how we are trying to restrict these plants.

The first observations show that goldenrod is very appetizing for goats. How will this depletion reflected on its presence in the area, will be monitored throughout the year. First prospects are good and proceedings nature friendly.
