Monitoring Fen Orchid in the Strajanov Breg Nature Reserve
In the Strajanov Breg Nature Reserve (the south-eastern section of the Ljubljana Marsh), we conducted a survey between the 14th and 21st July 2015 to determine the size and age structure of the Fen Orchid (Liparis loeselii) population by using the ‘total specimen count’ method. We measured the size and determined the stage of development (flowering plant, seed-forming plant, non-flowering shoot with two leaves and non-flowering shoot with one leaf). The habitat of specimens found across a surface area of 1m² has been defined as a microhabitat. We marked 131 microhabitats and found 581 Fen Orchid specimens, which is twice the number of specimens found in 2009 when this area was last monitored. The record plant this year had a length of 25 cm.
