The volunteer community work campaign in Strajanov Breg
On Sunday, 7th November 2015, we joined up with volunteers for a community work campaign in Strajanov Breg to remove wood remains that were left over after woodcutting in the overgrown valley. There were about thirty of us, including some locals from nearby villages. After the initial presentation of the ‘People for the Marsh’ project, the EGP financial mechanism, the valley and its importance in the preservation of rare and endangered species in the Ljubljana Marsh area, we formed smaller groups and began our work. We removed rush shoots, gathered and stacked smaller wood remains at the edge of the valley, clipped and cut the Common Alder stump growths, and removed larger waste items from the valley (e.g. tyres, washing machines and kitchenware) to then be taken to waste disposal facilities.
The pleasant socialising was accompanied by warm autumn weather, a delicious snack and the magical features of the valley and its nature. Afterwards, warmed by the autumn sun and pleasantly tired after our efforts, we headed for some goulash and cheese štruklji in a nearby restaurant.
